Basics of Paragraph Writing Part 2

Hello everyone. Today I want to continue my lesson on how to write a good paragraph. Before this, I showed you the first step of it. Let's see what we need to do for the next steps.

.      2. Brainstorming for Ideas

After you have your topic sentence, think of ideas to explain or develop the main idea. Writing all these ideas down.

·        Write down any and all ideas that come into your head.
·        Write your ideas in short notes.

Ex : It is expensive to own a car.

Ideas :  1) road tax and insurance

            2) maintenance costs

            3) bank loan

            4) petrol

            5) tyres

     3. Selecting and Organising Ideas

After writing down all your ideas, look at them again. Keep the ones which are relevant to the main idea and drop or cancel those which are not relevant.

Ex : It is expensive to own a car.

Ideas :  ( / )  road tax and insurance

            ( x ) maintenance costs

            ( / )  bank loan

            ( / )  petrol

            ( x ) tyres

The next thing you have to do is how you want to arrange the ideas you are keeping. Whcih idea do you start with in your paragraph ?

There are 2 ways you can arrange your ideas :-

1) You can list your ideas in a simple plan :-

Topic sentence : It is your ideas in a simple plan :-

     1. road tax and insurance

     2. maintenance costs

     3. rising cost of petrol

2. You can arrange your ideas into a graphic organiser :-

Exercise 2 :

Choose any 2 topics from Exercise 1 ,and

1.   brainstorm for ideas;

3.   arrange ideas into a plan or graphic organiser
