Basics of Paragraph Writing Part 3

Welcome again to my "Write it Right". Today, I would like to continue our Basics of Paragprah Writing with the fourth steps.

4.  Writing up the Paragraph

  • When you are writing up the paragraph, there are several things you have to remember.

         1.   Give your paragraph a title

         2.   Start the paragraph away from the margin -

                 indent the first line

         3.    Write good sentences.

         4.    Use transitional expressions wherever
                necessary.

Example :-

Owning a car

indent   It is expensive to own a car. First, you have to pay for the road tax and insurance every year. Second, it is not cheap to maintain the car. You have to send it for regular service and spare parts are not cheap. Finally, the cost of petrol is rising. The more we use the car, the more petrol we have to buy. It looks like only people with a steady income can afford to own a car.

  • Two important criteria of a successful paragraph are unity and coherence

Achieving Paragraph Unity

  • When you write your paragraph, make sure that you do not stray away from the main focus or idea that is expressed in the topic sentence.
  • If you write out of point or include details which are irrelevant to the main focus, your paragraph will lack unity.

Example : -

It is expensive to own a car. First, you have to pay for road tax and insurance every year. You can pay your road tax at the Road Transport Department or at the Post Office. Second, …..

Where you can pay your road tax is irrelevant information and does not in any way relate to your main idea – it is expensive to own a car.

Achieving Paragraph Coherence

·        ‘ To cohere’ means  ‘ to stick together’

·    Coherence in writing means that all ideas flow smoothly from one sentence to the next, from one paragraph to the next.

·      There are ways to achieve coherence in your writing and one of the most common and important ways in through the use of transitional expressions.
